The wisdom of a child…

“Mum, do I have Autism?”  Master seven was standing in front of me with a furrowed brow.

“Well, we think so,”
“Because people with Autism think a little differently to other people,”
“No, why do I have it?”
“Oh, because you’re special,”
“So why do kids tease me?”
“People can do silly things when they don’t understand something.  Perhaps the children don’t understand about Autism?”
“Hmm so it’s not a bad thing?”
“No, son.  It is good in many many ways!”
“Okay, so it’s like a super power?”
“I guess you could say that,”
“YES!” *fist pump*  “I think I’m going to need a cape,”

Now WHERE did I put that sewing machine…

It’s Thankful Thursday again and I’m always grateful for some simplicity and wisdom. ;)
How about you?

Now I just have to hope he doesn’t think that means beating up another child… I shall need to sort that. *sigh* ;) xxx

Emily @ Have a laugh on me (7 years ago)

Aww that is a gorgeous conversation. But I’m also a little sad when he said about kids teasing him, that is the one thing I fear the most for my kids, myself being someone who was teased A LOT as a kid.

It does break my heart Emily but I can’t change how others see him, I can only help how he sees himself… and hope that is enough to keep him strong and keep the lines of communication open. I was teased a lot as a child too and I struggle to understand the mentality. :/ xx

He is most definitely special Leigh. I’m just glad he doesn’t expect a lycra suit. Lycra has never been my forte! ;) xx

Kirsty @ My Home Truths (7 years ago)

I have had conversations like that with 8yo Gilbert who also asks me why he has autism and albinism on a regular basis – I like your answers BTW! I haven’t had the ‘autism’ conversation with 7yo Matilda yet but we will need to do that sooner rather than later… Good luck putting together that cape!

It must be quite a challenge to even attempt to understand why at such a young age I think Kirsty. I’m still awaiting my instructions for the cape… *sigh* xx
