Wordless Wednesday – The Park

I have another confession to make.  I love amusement parks.  The older, the better.  Think I need a holiday around the world taking photos of them. Abandoned or refurbished.  They fascinate me.

I learnt a lot of the history of Sydney’s Luna Park growing up.  It was a dream to be there one day… and then it closed after a tragic fire in 1979.  For years I wished I’d had the opportunity to visit and just be there.

By 2004, Master 18 (who was 9 at the time) and I found ourselves in Sydney for a week due to a consultation with another oncologist at Westmead Childrens Hospital.  Luna Park was under restoration after years of turmoil and uncertainity.  And even better, it was open to the public.

One long and slightly confusing train ride later (remember, we’re just country hicks at heart. ;)) we made it and I fell in love with the magic.  It was deserted and unfinished but I could sense the joy and elation of many millions before me.

I still wish I’d had the chance to visit the old Luna Park when I was younger.  So it was a given on our flying trip last weekend, that my partner and I found our way there.  This time with cameras in hand. :D

Linking up for the magic that is, Wordless Wednesday!

I am so scared of heights I think I would be spending a lot of time at the food vans rather than in line at those rides. Aren’t you scared? I suppose that is the fun of it…hope you had a great day

Heights are fine Lisa. I admit to being past the age of wanting to be on the rides these days but that doesn’t stop me loving the atmosphere, the laughter and squeals of joy of the children and the smiles of parents. I just want to capture the essence of that. xx

It’s such a great looking park – I only went once in my Sydney single days and I was a bit drunk – my bad :)

Thankfully I was sober both times I’ve been Emily… it’s a little difficult to focus a camera when inebriated! :) xx

I really enjoyed that Carmen. Have you been to Melbourne’s Luna Park at St. Kilda? You must! When I was in New York in October, I took photos of the (closed, but preparing for Halloween) Coney Island amusement park frontages. Did you see them on IG? Two weeks later, we were home, Sandy hit and the whole lot where we stood was underwater.

I’ve been to Luna Park a couple of times and loved it. It’s no Australia’s Wonderland but it was good. When we were in California we went to Knotts Berry Farm and it was the most amazing! If you love rollercoasters that is the only place to go, it was awesome! Can’t wait for Wet n Wild to open t here, we will be visiting there for sure!

I love Luna Park! I was fortunate enough to go a couple of times back in the 70′s. Loved the swinging chairs that went right over the water, the thing that went round and you ended up getting stuck to the wall and the huge slides with the potato sacks. Sigh! Memories! Your photos are so awesome, CJ! :) x
